last year: murray ended the host country’s 77-year wait by becoming the first british man since fred perry in 1936 to win wimbledon, beating novak djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. hitting with two hands off both wings, seeded only 15th, and without a title from any tournament in more than 1 1/2 years, bartoli beat sabine lisicki 6-1, 6-4. it was bartoli’s first grand slam trophy – and her last, because less than six weeks later, she surprisingly announced her retirement at age 28, saying her ”body was really starting to fall apart.”
